What is HTM 01-04?
HTM 01-04 is the official Health Technical Memorandum that provides guidance on the decontamination of linen in health and social care settings. It outlines safe practices for handling, processing and storing laundry.
What types of laundry does this apply to?
All linen used in healthcare settings; including bed sheets, gowns, towels, uniforms and curtains.
How should laundry be segregated?
Use colour-coded bags, such as:
- Red for infected/soiled linen
- White for used but non-infectious linen
- Blue/green for clean linen (check local policy)
What PPE should be worn when handling laundry?
Always wear gloves and aprons when handling dirty/soiled linen. Perform hand hygiene before and after handling.
Where should clean linen be stored?
In a dry, clean area above floor level, away from used or soiled linen.
Can clean and used linen be transported together?
No. Use separate trolleys or containers to avoid cross-contamination.
Who is responsible for laundry safety?
Everyone involved in handling linen; from clinical staff to domestic teams; must follow HTM 01-04 protocols.
What if I see laundry being handled incorrectly?
Report it immediately to your IPC lead/link practitioner or supervisor. Everyone plays a role in maintaining standards.
