Correct waste handling protects people, the environment and your organisation.
What is HTM 07-01?
It’s the official NHS guidance for the safe and sustainable management of healthcare waste, updated in 2023 to reflect best practice and environmental goals.
Who must follow HTM 07-01?
All health and social care providers in England and Wales; including hospitals, clinics, care homes, primary care and community services; whether NHS or independent.
What types of waste does it cover?
Clinical waste, offensive waste, sharps, pharmaceutical waste, cytotoxic/cytostatic waste and domestic waste; each with specific handling and disposal requirements.
How should waste be classified and segregated?
By type and risk level. Use colour-coded bags and containers to ensure correct segregation at the point of generation.
What are the key colour codes?
- Orange: Infectious waste
- Yellow: Highly infectious or hazardous
- Purple: Cytotoxic/cytostatic
- Blue: Medicinal waste
- Black: Domestic waste
- Tiger stripe (yellow with black stripes): Offensive waste (non-infectious)
What are the storage requirements?
Waste must be stored securely in designated areas, away from public access and in containers that prevent leaks and contamination.
How often should audits be done?
Waste audits must be conducted regularly to ensure compliance, with results documented and reviewed as part of pre-acceptance procedures.
