Cabinet Member, Children, Young People and Families, Hertfordshire County Council

Fiona Thomson is Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, as well as Cabinet Member for Housing at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.

Fiona has served as an HCC County Councillor since 2021 and Cabinet Member from 2022. She has also served as a Councillor at Welwyn Hatfield for over 14 years, where she has held a variety of Lead Member roles and was appointed to Cabinet in 2018. Fiona has represented Welwyn Hatfield on the Hertfordshire Health Scrutiny Committee, Hertfordshire Armed Forces Community Covenant Board, and Hertfordshire Climate Change and Sustainability Partnership.

A qualified Nurse and Midwife, Fiona also worked in Early Years for 10 years, and was instrumental in setting up Home-Start Welwyn Hatfield and subsequently Home-Start Hertfordshire, where she served as a volunteer trustee for 9 years. Fiona has been the chair of the Welwyn Hatfield Dementia Action Alliance since its inauguration in 2016, working with partner organisations to help create a Dementia Friendly Welwyn Hatfield.  From her experience in Health and Early Years Fiona welcomes the opportunities within the ICP to bring Children’s Health and Social Care closer together to enable the best outcomes for Children, Young People, and Families.

An advocate for wellbeing, Fiona enjoys the benefits of walking with family and friends and has undertaken several Moon Walk marathons and the Camino de Santiago. She enjoys travelling with family and discovering new walks around the UK and abroad.
