A stroke can happen to anyone at any age, but you are at greater risk if you are over 50, from a Black or South Asian background or if you lead an unhealthy lifestyle. But by making some simple lifestyle changes now, you can cut your risk of having a stroke in the future:
- Stop smoking
- Be more active
- Drink alcohol within the recommended limits
- Eat a healthy diet
- Stay a healthy weight
Having regular check ups can also help pick up on possible problems early. Simple things like getting your blood pressure checked will make sure you don’t have hidden high blood pressure that is an invisible danger. There are more than 200 pharmacies across Hertfordshire and west Essex where you can have a fast and free check.
Don’t delay – if you see a sign of stroke, call 999
Stroke is a medical emergency. If you experience any of the symptoms below, you should call 999 immediately.
Think FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) if you think you, or a loved one is having a stroke:
Face weakness: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
Arm weakness: Can the person raise both arms?
Speech problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
Time to call 999: if you see any of these signs.
Always call 999 straight away.
If you live in or around Harlow, please do not travel to The Princess Alexandra Hospital as there is no specialist stroke unit at the hospital – if you travel there you will need to be moved to another hospital that has a stroke unit. This will take time and it delays vital treatment. By calling 999 at the first sign of a stroke, paramedics can take you or your loved one to the nearest specialist stroke unit, which could be in Chelmsford, Romford or Cambridge depending on where you live.
